In the manufacture and processing of rolled steel (coils, rings) what matters is the very high quality of the material. So that this can be supervised online and delivery specifications can also be guaranteed, at Dr. Brockhaus Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG (BROCKHAUS), Lüdenscheid, an optical measuring instrument has been developed to assist in the examination of the material used with regard to measuring the width and detecting any holes or cracked edges. The width measurement and hole detection instrument can be used for materials of varying widths and be integrated as an Inline measuring instrument in continuous production and inspection lines.

It comprises the following components: 19” cabinet with measuring unit and colour monitor, high resolution line scan camera and background lighting. In addition there is high performance software which provides permanent presentation and evaluation of the measuring results in real time. The software enables accurate localization of the fault throughout the full length of the strip. In addition to this deviations from the nominal value of the material width are indicated and documented.
